What Is Mold?

Mold is a microscopic organism, a type of fungus that can grow and flourish in optimal conditions, such as when moisture and food are present. Mold is often associated with humid, damp conditions that allow it to grow. In ideal conditions, mold will release spores (seeds) into the air to further its growth.

What Is Mold?

Water leaks such as leaky roofs and pipes are obvious sources of moisture. Some moisture sources can be more obscure such as condensation from air infiltration and HVAC leaks. This moisture facilitates mold growth. Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, attics, and basements or crawlspaces are prime mold growth locations, but mold can be found in any area of the building. Mold requires an organic food source in order to grow as well. Mold can feed on any organic material such as the paper on drywall, wood framing members, wallpaper, wall paints, carpet, and many more.
